Recycle your old child car seats
What should you do with old child car seats? Most child car seats should only be used for six years after their manufacture date. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) offers these guidelines. Check the bottom of your seat; most seats will have an expiration date or a manufacture date. In other situations, specifically car wrecks (even minor ones), it’s best to buy a new car seat in case your current one was compromised somehow.
Recycling is the best option, rather than sending it out with your trash to sit in a landfill for a few thousand years. But recycling isn’t easy, and while 18 states have programs in place for recycling car seats, Alabama isn’t one of them.
Walmart has a solution that is easy for you. This month, through September 30, you can recycle any old car seat by taking it to a participating Walmart, and for your trouble, you’ll receive a $30 gift card to use in their store. Walmart, in conjunction with TerraCycle, is celebrating National Baby Safety Month by offering this deal.
